“Which sofa or fabric works best with pets?” The honest answer: a completely pet-proof sofa does not exist. Every animal behaves differently. One cat may not care about the sofa, while another sees every piece of furniture as a scratching post. And a small lap dog, of course, puts different demands on a sofa than a heavy dog with coarse hair and muddy paws.
Still, choosing the right fabric, colour and configuration makes a big difference. With a strong, tightly woven fabric and smart maintenance, your sofa will stay beautiful for longer, even when your dog or cat regularly lies on it.
At 4x6 sofa, we are happy to be honest about this. For the longest lifespan, it is better not to let pets on the sofa. At the same time, we know that for many owners, the sofa is precisely the place to relax together. That is why in this guide we explain which sofa fabrics are the most practical for cats and dogs, which fabrics are best avoided, and how to remove hair and stains more easily.
What is the best sofa fabric for cats?
With cats, the claws and the structure of the fabric are particularly important. The looser or coarser the weave, the easier it is for a claw to get a grip. A smooth, tightly woven fabric is therefore usually the safest choice.
Velours: our favourite for cats
We often recommend velours to households with cats. The fabric has a dense structure and contains no obvious loops in which claws can easily get caught. As a result, cat claws get a grip less easily than on, for example, bouclé or a coarsely woven fabric.
One of our customers had two kittens that were constantly running across the sofa. Their claws did not go through the velours fabric, but the wild running did leave visible streaks in the pile. These could be partially brushed out with a velours brush. This clearly shows that not only the fabric, but also the animal's behaviour is a determining factor.
Within our collection, the velours fabric #22 is the most logical choice when cat claws are the main concern. Fabrics #06, #15, #16, #23 and 24 also appear to be well suited for pets, but these are also new fabrics for us (as of 1 September 2026), so we cannot yet speak from experience.
Which fabrics are best avoided with cats?
Bouclé and other fabrics with loops or an open structure are less suitable if your cat likes to scratch. The claws can get caught in the loops, causing snags or damage.
With cats, we therefore advise being extra careful with fabrics that have a slightly coarser structure, such as #07, #08, #13 and #14. We also recommend fabric #15 less readily: small snags and damage stand out relatively strongly on it.
Why a melange fabric can still be practical
A melange fabric consists of multiple shades. As a result, hair, small stains and light signs of wear often stand out less than on a completely plain fabric.
For households with pets, our beige melange #09 and ecru melange #18 are practical options, as long as the structure suits your animal's behaviour and claws. A melange fabric is not automatically the most scratch-resistant choice, but small signs of wear are often less visible and a loose snag can sometimes be carefully tucked away on the back of the fabric.
How to prevent your cat from scratching the sofa?
- Place a sturdy scratching post close to the place where your cat likes to lie.
- Reward your cat when he or she uses the scratching post.
- If necessary, use a cat repellent spray, but always test it on the colour sample or in an inconspicuous place first.
- Temporarily protect a favourite lying or scratching spot with a throw or loose cover.
- Order extra sofa fabric to have a matching cat bed or protective cover made.
At 4x6 sofa, you can order extra fabric for €25 per metre, with a width of 140 cm. This allows you to have, for example, a throw, armrest cover or upholstery for a cat bed made.
How to easily remove cat hair from the sofa?
- Use a clothing roller or reusable hair remover daily.
- Vacuum at least once a week with a furniture brush and also include the loose cushions.
- Sweep hair together with a slightly damp microfibre cloth.
- Always brush velours in the direction of the pile and preferably use a suitable velours brush.

What is the best sofa fabric for dogs?
With dogs, other factors usually come into play than with cats. Think of hair, dirt from outside, moisture, weight and intensive use. A light dog lying on its own blanket places different demands on a sofa than a heavy dog that jumps on the same seat daily.
For dogs, we usually recommend a strong furniture fabric with a dense structure, which is easy to vacuum and clean.
Pay attention to the Martindale score
The Martindale score indicates how abrasion-resistant a furniture fabric is. The higher the score, the better the fabric withstands friction and intensive use. The score does not say everything about stain sensitivity or cat claws, but it is a useful indication when your dog often lies on the sofa.
Choose a colour that suits the coat
The colour of your dog or cat has a surprisingly large influence on how clean a sofa looks. Dark hair stands out more on a light sofa and light hair is clearly more visible on a dark sofa.
A sofa colour that is close to the colour of your animal's coat can therefore be very practical. Do you have a light dog? Then beige, ecru and light melanges are often forgiving. With a dark dog, a deeper colour can be more convenient. Do keep in mind that mud and moisture can be more visible on light fabrics.
Melange or velours for dogs?
Melange fabrics such as #09 and #18 often hide hair and small stains well. If your dog has sharp claws, preferably choose the most tightly woven variant.
Velours #22 is also a practical option. The dense structure is easy to clean and dirt often stays more on the surface. In combination with Protexx, you can remove a lot of daily dirt with a slightly damp cloth. Always follow the maintenance instructions of the fabric and Protexx.
Which sofa is the easiest to clean with pets?
A pet-friendly sofa must not only be strong, but above all practical in daily use. Therefore, pay attention to the following characteristics:
- a strong, tightly woven furniture fabric;
- a fabric that is easy to vacuum or carefully clean;
- loose or easily accessible cushions;
- a colour on which hair and small signs of wear stand out less;
- a modular configuration with loose elements.
A modular sofa has an extra advantage: loose elements are easier to move and clean around. If one element is visibly more worn after years of intensive use, you can often replace just one element at 4x6 sofa instead of buying a completely new sofa.
Smart solutions from 4x6 sofa for pets
After years of experience with modular sofas and pets, we know that no universal solution exists. The best advice depends on your animal's behaviour, the claws, the coat colour, the chosen fabric and the way the sofa is used.
1. Order extra fabric for a matching throw or bed
At 4x6 sofa, you can order extra fabric for €25 per metre. Have a throw, loose cover or upholstery for a dog or cat bed made from it. This gives your pet a fixed place that fits the sofa perfectly and is easier to keep clean separately.
2. Protect your sofa with Protexx
Especially with pets, we recommend the Protexx stain service. The treatment helps prevent liquids and dirt from penetrating directly into the fibres. If you cannot remove a stain yourself, you can use the Protexx stain service for three years. The treatment is PFAS-free.

Five practical tips for a sofa with pets
1. Choose a strong, tightly woven fabric
A dense structure gives claws less grip and is often easier to keep clean.
2. Avoid loops with cats
Bouclé and coarsely woven fabrics can be damaged more quickly because cat claws get caught in the loops.
3. Match the colour to the coat
Choose a colour or melange on which your pet's hair stands out less.
4. Give your pet a fixed place
A throw or blanket protects the favourite lying spot. With extra fabric from 4x6 sofa, you can have this completely match your sofa.
5. Deal with dirt and hair regularly
Remove hair weekly, treat stains immediately according to the maintenance instructions and consider Protexx for extra certainty.
Frequently asked questions about sofas and pets
Which sofa fabric is best resistant to cat claws?
A smooth, tightly woven fabric gives cat claws the least grip. Velours is therefore often a better choice than bouclé or a fabric with obvious loops. No fabric is completely scratch-resistant.
Which fabric attracts the fewest cat or dog hairs?
No fabric is completely hair-free. On smooth, tightly woven fabrics, hair is usually easier to remove. A melange or a colour that matches the coat ensures that loose hairs stand out less.
Is bouclé suitable for a home with cats?
Bouclé is less suitable for cats that like to scratch. The claws can get caught in the loops and thus cause snags.
Which sofa colour is convenient with a dog?
Preferably choose a colour that matches the coat. Light hair stands out less on a light sofa; dark hair is less visible on a dark fabric. Melanges are often extra forgiving.
How do I remove pet hair from my sofa?
Use a clothing roller, furniture brush or slightly damp microfibre cloth. Vacuum the sofa at least once a week and also include the seams and loose cushions.
Can I replace one part of a modular sofa?
With a modular sofa, you can often replace one loose element when it shows more wear after years of intensive use. Ask 4x6 sofa about the possibilities for your model, fabric and colour.
Conclusion: choose the sofa that suits your pet
A completely pet-proof sofa does not exist. But with a tightly woven fabric, a smart colour choice and regular maintenance, you can greatly reduce the chance of visible hair, snags and stains.
If you have a cat that likes to scratch, velours is usually a better option than bouclé. With dogs, durability, ease of cleaning and the colour of the coat are extra important. And with a matching throw, extra fabric and Protexx, you give your sofa additional protection.
